In my last couple years of high school, they would take us to a homeless shelter, run by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, for volunteer work on Fridays. It was uncomfortable, and awkward. It's not where you'd want to go on a Friday night as a teenager.
We would feed the men dinner, and chat with them. They would tell you stories about their life. Often, it was somewhat disturbing. It was deeply profound. It opened my worldview, and found it to be an incredibly powerful part of my education.
